ZOOVIEWS is Friends of High Park Zoo’s live speaker series with the ability to ask questions of an expert!

Join on Saturday, May 15 at 9:00am EST, along with animal expert Dr. Emilio A. Herrera Perez to learn more about capybaras.

This talk will be about the capybara – its size, some general characteristics such as precociality, diet and social system.

In 1986, Dr. Herrera Perez obtained a PhD from Oxford University (or D.Phil. as they call it there) working on the behaviour of capybaras. After that he became a professor at Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) in Caracas, Venezuela, where he stayed until his retirement a few years ago. Dr. Herrera Perez’s interest in research is to look at behaviour in the light of evolution, focusing on capybaras: how group living, mating behaviour, social hierarchy, cooperation and altruism (if present) are relevant to the survival and reproductive success of individuals. He has some 50 publications on those topics!
